Mind-Stomach Relationship

I have always believed that the mind and stomach are not connected. But today a friend of mine asked me, 'Do you think there is a relationship between your mind and stomach?" My immediate response was 'No'. However, it got me thinking.

I think it works like this. The stomach signals to the mind that it is empty and the mind processes the data and determines that it is hungry. The output of this process is you knowledge that you are hungry. Now, I have always wondered how ppl can miss a meal when they are engrosed in work or when the mind is thinking about something.. Here is a plausible explanation.. I think when there is something more important on the mind, the mind is oblivious of all other signals from your body and hence when u r sad or engrossed you dont feel hungry..

Okies me shall go have lunch :D

I have seen many people skipping their food when they are highly depressed. What sin has the stomach done when the mind is doing all the sins? pavam panrathu ellam manasu... punishment mattum vayithukka? enna ulagam da saami!!!!

:-D :-D :-D mind-stomach relationship huhh - gotcha, looks like you've been missing many lunches/dinners nowadays ;) :P

Very simple, brain is your cpu, nerve centers are your inputs/outputs, when you are sad/busy, that process is given higher priority by the cpu and hence others are not even processed. But that is the critical point, it does not mean, your body does not need food - it simply means, you have ignored your body's request for food...which is very damaging indeed.... :)

That brings me to a very important question ~ Why do people diet? How can you program your mind to skip even extremely desirable food? I mean how can people say noo to ICE CREAM !!

Anonymous said...

Seagull - Have the ice cream in front of u and turn ur head to ur right and then to ur left..That way u can say no to an Ice cream...Sorry..kadi-o-kadi-a... :)

Vidya - S/W engineer-nu prove pannita...Over technical-a irukku..adhanaala enakku avvalova puriyala... ;)

Also, I have never missed a meal --> I am never engrossed in my (official) work!! :)

Mind and stomach or definitely related. Personally speaking when I am hungry I get a little cranky, my mind is a little less friendly at that point because it is so focussed on food. On the other hand when I am really engrossed with something I can skip food more than once at times.

Mind and stomach are very closely connected. Ex:If u take sathvik foods you become more mellow and are not prone to extremes of emotions.

@Ammu - priority theory...hmmm

@Shas - Its just that the person chooses to ignore the call from the stomach

The stomach always signals the brain. Its just that our conscious mind over rules the subconscious mind and so we decide to continue to work.
